(West Okoboji)– The documented presence of zebra mussels in West Lake Okoboji has one community that draws its drinking water from the lake taking some preventive actions. Eric Stohl of Milford Municipal Utilities tells KUOO news they’re putting in a back-up feed line from the pump house at Terrace Park out into the lake.

The project includes installation of a copper screen over the intakes along with an airburst system.

Stohl says the project is slated for completion in July.

Stohl says the project is unique and is a pilot project they’re working in cooperation with the DNR on. He says the utility has contracted with a nationally known engineering firm on the project.
