The Okoboji Summer Theatre kicked off its 55th season with a musical opener on Tuesday, June 12 with “The Marvelous Wonderettes.”

Act one incorporates many of our favorite pop songs from the 1950s, as four young singers entertain their classmates at Springfield High’s 1958 senior prom. Songs include “Mr. Sandman,” “Lollipop,” “Dream Lover,” and Sincerely.”

In act two, the four women reunite on stage for the Springfield High class reunion where The Marvelous Wonderettes bring audiences some tunes from the 1960s, including “It’s In His Kiss,” “It’s My Party,” “Son of a Preacher Man,” and “Respect.”

While the music takes center stage in “The Marvelous Wonderettes,” there’s enough of a plot to bring some laughs and create some audience connections with the characters. Betty Jean (Leslie Hudson) is the lovable tomboy whose best friend Cindy Lou (Britany Morgan) has just stolen her boyfriend. Understudy Dylan Shelofsky embodied Missy, the shy teen who finally reveals her crush at the prom, and high energy Suzy (Julia Golder) is that perfect cheerleader, who forever defys the myth that you cannot sing and chew gum.

The four Stephen’s College students provided a truly magnificent season opener with their beautiful harmonies and commendable character development. This is one not to miss.

“The Marvelous Wonderettes” continues through Sunday at the Okoboji Summer Theatre.
